CLAUDIO CARLI WAS BORN UNDER THE SIGN OF CANCER, JUNE 29~, 1947, IN ASSISI, where he lived and worked, where he died on March 8, 2021
HE BEGAN TO PAINT AT THE AGE OF TEN, AT A TIME WHEN IN ASSISI, THERE WERE AMONG OTHERS, ARTISTS VERY DISTANT FROM ONE ANOTHER, SUCH AS WILLIAM CONGDON (FROM PROVIDENCE, RI) AND PERIODICALLY, BACK FROM ROME, RICCARDO FRANCALANCIA.
IN 1 965 HE RECEIVED HIS HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA FROM THE LICEO ARTISTICO IN FLORENCE AND HE ENROLLED IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE SAME CITY. DURING THIS TIME HE ALSO TAUGHT PHOTOGRAPHY IN A MIDDLE SCHOOL IN ASSISI AND WORKED AS A CREATIVE GRAPHIC DESIGNER IN FRANCO BURCINI'S STUDIO A. THESE ARE THE YEARS IN WHICH HE TRAVELED THROUGHOUT EUROPE, MOSTLY IN SPAIN, A COUNTRY HE LOVES FOR ITS LANDSCAPES, THE EXTRAORDINARY SOCIAL CHARACTER OF THE PEOPLE, AND THE MYSTERIOUS ELEMENTS OF BULL?FIGHTING, WHICH HAD STRUCK ERNEST HEMINGWAY IN THE SAME WAY.
IN 1980 HE MET THE YOUNG DUTCH PAINTER MAX KREIJN CARLI'S PAINTINGS, CLOSELY RELATED TO KREIJN WERE CLOSE-UP IMAGES OF SHADED INTERIORS, AND FEELING FACADES AND WINDOWPANES COVERED WITH DUST, DEPICTED WITH A METHODOLOGY ATTENTIVE TO RENDERING A SENSE OF REALISM, IN 1965 HE PARTICIPATED WITH VITTORIO OTTAVIANI AND EZIO GENOVESI IN THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF ARCHITECTURE FOR THE BIENNALE DI VENEZIA.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NINETIES HIS INTEREST WAS DIRECTED ONCE AGAIN TOWARDS OPEN NATURE. INFLUENCES ARE FOUND AMONGST THE LANDSCAPE MASTERS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY : CONSTABLE AND COROT, THE PAINTERS OF "BARBIZON", AND THE MACCHIAIOLI. WORTH MENTIONING DURING THIS PHASE IS THE EXHIBIT-INSTALLATION "PAESAGGI DI UNA FACCIATA" (FACADE LANDSCAPES) IN SEPTEMBER OF 199 1 , WHERE CANVASES WERE PLACED ON THE FACADE OF A SEVENTEENTH CENTURY "PALAZZETTO" IN ASSISI. IN ADDITION, CARLI INSTALLED A SERIES OF PAINTINGS STRATEGICALLY PLACED ON NEARBY MOUNT SUBASIO, AND CALLED IT "AD CAELUM. " 1994 A BRIEF SOJOURN IN PUGLIA, IN SOUTHERN ITALY, TOGETHER WITH HIS READINGS OF BORGES, WILDE,  AND A PHASE OF RESEARCH INTO THE DEPICTION OF LANDSCAPE, DETERMINED HIS PRESENT WORK WHICH NOW APPEARS MORE AS A CONCEPTUAL OPERATION, RATHER THAN AN EXERCISE IN STYLE.
